Thousands Ready to Walk to End Alzheimer's
DAYTON -- Memories define and fulfill our lives, so imagine losing all of them, including forgetting who you are?
Nearly 5.5 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease, including 30,000 people right here in the Miami Valley, but there are so many more fighting to end this epidemic.
Giving out expert advice is something Charlene Chattams-Wingard never expected to be doing.
"If I can help one person catch it early enough," explained Charlene who we first met in the summer of 2012, when she was caring for her mother, Ethel, who had Alzheimer's disease.
Ethel had an unforgettable laugh, and Charlene can still here it, although her mom passed away in May, about eight months after we interviewed the family.
"Nobody can explain that void unless they've had it themselves, to lose that loved one you were taking care of. She loved family, that was her main pride and joy, was family," Charlene said.
She keeps her mom's memory alive by volunteering her time for the Alzheimer's Association. They helped her family get through it.
"Being able to get the right people to help us with it, so she had a good quality of life all the way 'til the end."
She educates people on the different programs the Alzheimer's Association has for families battling the disease, and on the work they're doing to try and find a cure. She'll be walking to end Alzheimer's on Sept. 28 with thousands of others in Dayton, with her mom in mind every step of the way.
"She knew us all the way 'til the end (and she was still smiling?) yes, yes she was."
