UPDATE: Dump Truck Snaps Power Pole in Half; Catches Fire

DAYTON -- A dump truck accident shut down Gettysburg Avenue at Oakridge Drive for several hours on Monday.

Crews arrived on the scene around 4 p.m. and saw a dump truck engulfed in flames.

"I seen this big cloud of smoke, and the next thing I knew I heard a big boom," said Rickie, who declined to give his last name.

"There was so much black smoke out here, it was just a cloud of black smoke, and the tree was on fire, and the next thing you know the truck blew up," said Teresa Goldsmith.

"It was, way up in the air," said Rickie. "It was humungous."

Neighbors in the West Dayton neighborhood describe the scene moments after the dump truck slammed into two poles, barely missing a home.
"I had just got home, and I was reading a book," said the homeowner. "And I heard something go real loud and I got up and looked, and the fire was coming, nothing but smoke."

It took fire crews about 20 minutes to get the flames under control, and even after they did, the truck smoldered for an hour after.

The tree in the front yard was scorched and the siding on two homes was melted.

"This house has been hit several times," homeowner Sheila Moore said. "But just less than a year ago, it was hit in the same place."

Moore and her mother examined the damage caused by this accident, but say that just a little more than a year ago someone lost control of their car and slammed into the side of their house.

"Speed, it's speed," said Moore.

"The speed, no one wants to wait for the lights to change," said Sheila's mother.

Neighbors also say this intersection is a problem.

"People run this light all the time, they speed," said Goldsmith. "I see accidents on this strip right here, at least once a month, twice a month."

But Sheila and her mother have a solution to their speeding problem.

"I would like to see some camera lights go up here," said Sheila's mother.

Police say speed was not a factor in this particular crash. In fact, they say the driver told them the brakes went out on the truck, and he made the split-second decision to turn toward the two poles instead of a car.

The driver was cited for failure to control an unsafe vehicle.

Earlier coverage:

DAYTON -- Emergency crews rushed to Oakridge and Gettysburg avenues after a dump truck slammed into a pole and caught fire.

Smoke could be scene several blocks away from the fire. The accident happened just after 4 p.m. and has closed the intersection.

Dayton Power & Light arrived on the scene because it was their pole that  snapped in half.  Power lines were down, although no one lost power.

Two homes were damaged after the fire caused the siding to melt.

Diesel spilled but most burned up before it reached the sewer drain.

The dump truck driver was cited for failure to control an unsafe vehicle.
