Dayton Man Pleads Guilty to Animal Cruelty, Neglect
DAYTON -- A Dayton man pleaded guilty Monday to one count of Animal Cruelty and one count of Animal Neglect stemming from a police investigation in June.
Rodney Smith, 46, pleaded guilty to the charges in Dayton Municipal Court and was ordered to not have animals in his possession for five years and to pay $2,000 restitution to the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center. Smith was also ordered to forfeit his remaining six animals. Smith was sentenced to 270 days in jail and a $400 fine. By pleading guilty, the jail terms were suspended and he was ordered to pay a $50 fine with the balance suspended.
Police were called to 45 Sandhurst Drive in Dayton on June 23 on the report of a child living in deplorable conditions. A 10-year-old girl was found living in the house with 16 dogs, two cats, three hamsters, two chinchillas and two parrots.
The conditions in the home were appalling for both humans and animals, said Mark Kumpf, Director of the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center. With medical care from the dedicated staff at the ARC, many of these animals have or will find new homes.
Most of the animals have been adopted or transferred to the Humane Society of Greater Dayton while others are still under medical care at the ARC. Once they are nursed back to health, they may be available for adoption.
For information on these animals and the many others available for adoption, visit the ARC at 6790 Webster Street in Dayton from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, or 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.
