Suspected Outlet Shoplifter Has History of Fleeing from Police
MONROE -- The man shot by a Monroe Police officer Saturday evening after police said he attempted to hit a police officer with his car had his arraignment hearing Monday afternoon.
Jamarcus Brown, 22, of Dayton was in a wheel chair for his arraignment hearing as he recovers from the gunshot wound.
Prosecutors said Brown is considered a flight risk and bond was set at $75,000.
Police said Brown was trying to steal designer sunglasses from the Sunglass Hut at the Cincinnati Premium Outlets on Saturday night.
Officers said Brown took off running from the store and tried to get away in a car. Police said Brown also tried to run an officer over in the parking lot.
"By driving directly at the officer, he was reckless and could've caused serious physical harm to the officer," Monroe Police Detective Gregg Myers said.
Monroe Police Officer Chad Caudill jumped on the hood of Brown's car and shot into the car, hitting Brown in the leg.
Brown was taken to the hospital, and then taken to jail. Officer Caudill wasn't hurt. The shooting has surprised shoppers, such as Joey Davis, at the Outlet Mall.
"It seems pretty safe to me," Davis said. "That's crazy. I wouldn't have expected that at a place like this."
Police said this isn't Brown's first run-in with police. Last week, he reportedly led Huber Heights police on a high-speed chase that reached 100 mph on I-70.
It ended Wednesday night when Brown crashed his car on a exit ramp along I-675 and he ran away leaving behind his wife in the car.
According to reports, Brown was arrested last summer for fleeing from officers in Dayton after having fictitious license plates.
Davis said it's good to know Brown's running days are over. "I'm glad they caught him," he said.
Brown is currently in the Warren County Jail facing several charges, including assault on a police officer. His next court date is set for Aug. 12.
