Ways to Drive Safely Within a Construction Zone
TIPP CITY -- Wednesday night's fiery crash happened miles away from a construction zone, and it's something that the Ohio State Patrol sees far too often.
Reporter Annette Peagler sought answers into what's being done to make sure you are safe within these zones.
Sergeant Joseph Gebhart with the Ohio State Patrol in Piqua says although an exact cause of the crash hasn't been determined, investigators do believe the semi that caused the crash was speeding and could have been distracted.
"So when something does happen and traffic comes to an abrupt stop they're not able to react if they haven't decrease their speed and increase that distance and that's what's so important that that is what we try to educate people through enforcement," Sgt. Gebhart explains.
He says there is a huge problem with speeding and monitoring within these zones and that's why his department has beefed up enforcement.
"If you're caught in the construction zone, fines are doubled and that's because it is so serious," he says.
Whenever there is construction - to keep you safe - officials say the signs go up immediately.
"That's going to go up first before anyone starts to work. We're always going to make sure the signs and cones are in place, I believe last night we had a flashing message board as well," said Mandi Dillon with ODOT.
There are many of things you can do before heading into a construction zone to avoid an accident like Wednesday.
"I put my flashers on sometimes. But basically slow down and if you can keep your distance between cars," said Suzanne Havenar of Piqua. "I know the roads are narrow but follow speed limits, a lot of people don't follow that."
One of the main reasons why terrible accidents can happen.
"When entering these zones, take the extra time to slow down to the reduce speeds, and really pay attention to what's going on around you," said Sgt. Gebhart.
