FOLLOW-UP: Signs Warning Pedestrians at Dangerous Intersection
MIAMI TOWNSHIP -- After a story aired only on ABC 22/FOX 45, The Ohio Department of Transportation and Miami Township Police are working together to figure out what can be done to potentially save lives.
We told you about a red light that was removed at Springboro Pike and Prestige Place that helped pedestrians cross safely.
Monday morning, ODOT set out signs warning pedestrians not to cross the five lanes of traffic.
But Tuesday night, our cameras caught three people crossing the street, despite the signs.
"People just be running across the street, you can get hit by a car out here," said Brandon Roebuck, a pedestrian.
"It's better to be safe than sorry," said Mohamed Redha, owner of Gyro Palace. "By them doing that they're preventing accidents from happening."
While people are happy the signs are up, they're worried it's just a temporary fix to a permanent problem.
"They should have done it in a better way," said Redha. "Made a crossway so people would actually be able to cross since they've been doing it for years.
We also went to the Miami Township Police Department to ask if they plan on doing anything else.
They tell us once the signs have been up for a while, they will step up enforcement and give out citations if people are caught jaywalking.
"The next day we already saw policeman out here talking about it, doing something about it," said Redha. "I'm glad that they're finding a solution, but I wish it was a better solution."
While it may not be a total fix, Redha is happy something is being done.
"I'm glad that you guys did this," said Redha. "It definitely helped and it's showing already."
Miami Township Police say they want to educate the pedestrians before they start citing.
