Wright-Patt Unveils New C-17 Simulator
WPAFB -- There's less than a dozen of them in the entire United States and now Wright-Patterson Air Force Base has its own C-17 flight simulator.
The 445th Airlift Wing hosted on Tuesday a C-17 Simulator Training System Facility ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Wright-Patterson is home to nine C-17 Globemaster III aircraft, and now pilots don't have to travel far to train for them. They can do it in the C-17 weapon training system, saving nearly a million dollars in training costs and fuel and preserving the real planes.
"The simulator provides cost-saving to the military and consequently less tax dollars needed from the public," said Tom Nagel, Fairborn mayor.
"We are lucky as a community that this kind of investment is going forward while we are in a period of sequestration," said Congressman Mike Turner (R-OH).
Everything operates the same as the real airplane. The cool thing about the C-17 training program is aircrew can make mistakes and they don't have to worry about crashing.
The new facility will enable pilots and loadmasters to train onsite instead of traveling to other bases around the country to keep up their flying certifications, which should result in significant savings.
The facility includes a new and fully networked C-17 weapon training system, a training management system, computer-based training devices, a core integrated processor task trainer and portable flight-planning devices. The new WST has the ability to be networked with other U.S. Air Force WST devices around the world for cross-team mission training.
"Today it's nice weather but it's hot. We are in Wright-Patterson, Ohio, we are in normal FAA Airspace. When I get in the simulator I can make it a cold, windy, cloudy day in Afghanistan," said Lt. Col. Rich Klarich. "I can have simulated threats that will act just like the bad guys and we can make threats from other aircraft threats from the ground we can fail systems on the airplane that will make the crew have to make decisions."
The training facility will also provide annual training for more than 120 U.S. Air Force Reserve C-17 crew members assigned to the 445th AW and 89th Airlift Squadron.
The C-17 is the newest, most flexible cargo aircraft to enter the airlift force.
