Hero Saves Teen From Burning Car
HOUSTON -- A Shelby County hero pulls a teen from a burning car. It happened just after midnight Thursday near Houston and Pampel roads in Houston. We obtained heart-stopping cruiser cam video of the fiery crash.
Shelby County deputies say two teenagers were driving drunk down the rural road when they wrecked their Jeep.
"I wasn't going to leave the boy burn in there. They're the same age as my boys," said Dan Boyer, who pulled the driver from the Jeep.
When Boyer went to bed, he didn't expect to wake up a hero.
"That was the last thing I was thinking about when I went to bed. My main thing was get him out and away from it before it blowed up," he said.
The video from the cruiser cam shows a ball of fire from the Jeep. The crash also knocked down power lines, causing several more small explosions, all in Dan's front yard.
"It amazes me how fast it all happened. I'd rather of just stayed in bed asleep and have them continue down the road and made it home," he said.
Deputies say the teens first hit a neighbor's mailbox, then ping-ponged down the road, eventually hitting Dan's mailbox, flipping the Jeep. There are still burn marks from when it caught fire.
"It is what it is. At least they both got out alive," Boyer said.
Shelby County deputies say Aaron Felver, 19, was able to escape on his own. But Boyer had to cut the driver, 18-year-old Matthew Larger, out of his seat belt with a knife. Seconds later the Jeep caught fire. Boyer and the teen he rescued barely got away safely.
"I ain't no hero. I just did what had to be done. That's the way I look at it," he said.
Larger is charged with OVI and failure to control. Deputies say, amazingly enough, the teens were not injured.
SHELBY COUNTY -- A Shelby County man is being called a hero after pulling a teenager out of a burning car early Thursday morning.
Video from a Shelby County deputy's cruiser shows a jeep burning in the Good Samaritan's front yard on Houston Road. The wreck knocked down live power lines, causing many small explosions.
Authorities say the passenger Aaron Felver, 19, was able to escape on his own. But the Good Samaritan had to cut the seat belt off the driver and pull him out. Deputies say the driver Matthew Larger, 18, was charged with OVI and failure to control. The teens weren't hurt.
