AAA: 34 Million on Road for Independence Day; Cheapest Places to Drive
DAYTON -- The Fourth of July holiday travel weekend kicks off tomorrow as July 3rd always goes down as one of the busiest travel days of the year.
"About 12-13 hours," said Accie Little who will be driving to New York tomorrow. He says he knows he has to get the best prices.
"I gas up once from here and then once I get the Pennsylvania that's my last time," he said.
Going East, Little will pay a lot for gas. Ohio's Tuesday average is about $3.23 but Pennsylvania is $3.47, West Virginia is $3.53 and New York is $3.72.
"Folks who are headed north into Michigan or Wisconsin you're under that $3.50 mark. Where you start to see the higher prices areas like new England New York and some areas out west," said Cindy Antrican, Public Affairs Manager for AAA.
According to AAA's U.S. gas map, it really is the Wild, Wild West. The further out you drive, the higher your bill. James Keith and his family will be driving south.
"Southern Kentucky is cheaper. Tennessee is cheaper than Kentucky," said Keith.
He's right Tennessee is $3.26 while Kentucky is $3.35. You will stay in that range driving South unless you go as far as Florida which is $3.44. But regardless of which direction you are traveling, one complaint is consistent.
"They always do...on the holiday; they always go up right before the holiday for some reason," said Keith.
"Just like today, look at how the gas jumped up today," said Little. "I figure next week after the fourth, everything will be over with, gas will be back down a gain. It's time to go to work, Monday morning."
"Wednesday is a good time for people to go out and Sunday is the peak time for people to come home. So you have a five day period of heavily concentrated increased traffic supply and demand. If those supply lines could keep pace with the demand I think we are going to see very moderate prices. If the demand starts to outpace the supply we could see the prices go up," said Antrican.
No matter how much you need to budget for this weekend, none of that matters if you don't drive safely. AAA Says there will be 34 million drivers this holiday weekend 1.4 million in Ohio.
AAA has an app where you can plan your trip, see the gas prices, work around construction sites and on their website they'll help you obey the laws of the land you're driving to, because those will change from state to state.
