Vault Closed, Deemed a Public Nuisance
DAYTON -- For the first time ever, the city of Dayton issued a temporary restraining order against The Vault, shutting the nightclub down until the courts decide if it will reopen.
The Vault's owner talked only to Reporter Annette Peagler and says his business is being wrongfully targeted.
The city shut down operations until further notice. A notice was posted on the nightclub's door Friday afternoon.
"The community and residents downtown and major businesses, I mean major businesses when they are complaining saying we're going to move out, we can't have that," said Major David Wolford with the Dayton Police Department.
Major Wolford says the decision to close the nightclub was influenced by not only the complaints from businesses, but also the Downtown Dayton Partnership.
"We're not in the business of trying to shut others down but we had so many complaints from so many different businesses and property owners we felt we had no choice but to speak up," said Sandy Gudorf, from Downtown Dayton Partnership.
The Vault's closing had nothing to do with Dayton's effort to have its liquor license revoked. Police say it's because it is a nuisance to the community. Police say the club has also been draining resources, with nearly 100 police calls in the last two years, along with a number of violent crimes.
The club has only been open for 20 months. Vault's co-owner, Hopson Bell, says Dayton doesn't support his business because of the type of crowd his business attracts. He also says the problems are not happening inside his club, but rather outside in the parking lot.
"I asked the police what else can we do to help our situation and we don't get any returned phone calls, we don't get any conversation from the Dayton police, all we get is negative press and negative publicity," said Bell.
Bell says he's put his life savings in this club and spent $2,500 on security. He believes it's a slap on the face to have his business shut down like this.
"These are people's jobs, an investment , there's nothing illegal that we're doing, we're just trying to run a business," said Bell.
Bell and his lawyer will have their chance to defend The Vault in court on July 12. ABC 22 News will bring you the results from that hearing.
