Keeping Your Pets Safe in the Heat

DAYTON -- Although we are on the tail end of a heat wave, we're still just half way through summer, which means for many people, temperatures can again soon be unbearable, but what about your pets?

Officials with the Montgomery County Animal Control say the heat can be dangerous to people, but it can also be deadly to your pets.

"Temperatures like this where we are up in the 90s and close to the 90s, a vehicle can heat up to 135 - 140 degrees within five minutes," said Steve Hurd with the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center.

Dayton Police and the Montgomery County Animal Control responded to a scene on Wilmington Avenue after a man left his dog in the car for more than 30 minutes.

"If you can't leave your baby in the car, why would you leave your dog in the car you know," said Joe Singleton of Dayton.

The man was filling his prescription at CVS and didn't realize how long it had been. Someone walked by the car, saw the dog in pain and called police.

"We've had a little bit of a spike in heat related cases, checking on animals without water or not sufficient water, no shade," said Sheila Marquis, officer with the Greater Dayton Humane Society.

The Humane Society of Greater Dayton say it's best to just keep your pets indoors in this type of heat.

"They're safer at home in a cooler environment, wait until it cools down," said Marquis.

If you have to take them outside, try filling up baby pools with water.

"Filling up a water bottle at night, throwing it in the freezer the next day drop it in the water and it will keep the water cool for the dogs," said Marquis.

Whatever you do, just don't leave them inside a hot car.

"I always tell people if they don't believe it, get in your car, weather like this put the windows down, crack and see how long you can sit in there it's not going to be very long because it gets really hot," said Hurd.
