Unemployment Low in Warren County, But Why?
WARREN COUNTY -- For years, Warren County has seen a lower unemployment rate than other surrounding counties.
The U.S. Department of Labor released Ohio's unemployment numbers for June and although rates in several counties in the Miami Valley are down, many are still high.
Montgomery County is at a 8.0, Clark County is at a 7.3, Greene County is at 7.4 and Warren County is at 6.4, that county has maintained a low rate for several years so Reporter Annette Peagler went to find out why.
"You have a strong political structure throughout the county that has worked hard to keep the tax rates low so that they can attract both the residential and the businesses," said Martin Russell, Director of Warren County Economic Development.
Companies want to build here because it's an area that's booming in the housing and business market. Warren County officials say they also provide small businesses with counseling and guidance and the county's central location between Dayton and Cincinnati markets help.
"Schools, the environment here in the county, just about all the schools are rated in the Excellent category, the housing stock is good," said Russell. "There's not one, I think, reason why the unemployment rate here is low. I think it's a combination of all those factors put together."
Surrounding counties, like Montgomery, are following Warren County's lead. The Austin Landing Project is one example. Developers just signed four major companies to move in.
"I think it's really convenient, having the Kroger here makes it easier to get groceries on the way home from work, and it gives us something to do, like our friends and I to like come here and we can hang out with the new stores," said Krista Dona from Springboro.
Russell says the solution is easy: provide people with positive incentives in their communities and in return, the companies will want to build.
