How to Opt Out of School Vaccinations, And Why Few Parents Do It
DAYTON -- It's hard to believe, but for some people school starts again in about three weeks.
"We went and got flu shots, hep shots, all the different shots you have to do," said Javier Carmona.
His 4-year-old daughter, Isabella, has all the vaccines she needs to start school, but first her parents needed to agree. While dad wanted them, mom didn't.
"She really didn't want to do it because she's afraid, you know all these little things that are happening with kids these days with doctors and vaccines that our child was going to be hurt," said Carmona. "But I was kind of for it because what's the chances of that happening? I wanted my daughter to be safe and protected from all those viruses."
"If you look at 1,000 students who had the vaccine 99.5 percent of them have had no side effects," said Dayton Children's Hospital infection preventionist Terrie Koss. "Some of the side effects may be a sore arm maybe they get a little bit of a fever, but we haven't seen a side effect here that was bad enough not to give further immunizations."
This is the state's legal immunization exemption form you would have to fill out if your child needs to opt out of the vaccinations. The three options you have to opt out are religious reasons, good cause, and medical reasons.
So basically if a parent really wants to get out of it, they can, but at Dayton Public Schools there are very few parents who go that route.
"It's not even going to be 1 percent, it's a small miniscule number of students who are non-compliant," said DPS Director of Health Services Virginia Noe.
Seventh to 10th graders must have their vaccination or the exemption form by the first day of school, other grades have two weeks to become compliant.
"If a parent does sign that and they are refusing, if we do have an outbreak of anything in the school, say we do have pertussis or we have a chicken pox break, they have to be excluded for two weeks and they cannot return until we know they are safe to return," said Noe.
"They will protect you from very contagious diseases, it will keep you from getting sick, it will keep you in school and it will keep your parents working and it will protect other children," said Koss. "Maybe there are some kids that have some diseases and can't take the vaccine so by you having the vaccine you will help protect them."
"When it comes down to it in the end it's all about the best decision for the child," said Carmona.
