Rainy Fourth Hurting Vendors

KETTERING -- Independence Day dousing!  Rain soaked festivals, parades, and fireworks displays across the Miami Valley.

Typically at Delco Park in Kettering, thousands of people pack into the park on Fourth of July.  But the rain kept many families away until right before the show started.

The annual Fourth of July fireworks celebration was in full swing at 6pm at Delco, although you wouldn't know it.  Not many people wanted to stand in the rain.

"It's a bummer.   Putting  it mildly it's a bummer," said Chef Rick Schaeffer with Brock Masterson's Catering and Events.

The wet weather kept many families away from Chef Rick's grill.  He's betting on 50 percent less business this year.

"The crowd is down.  The only thing good about the rain is last year it was 98 degrees.  So at least it's not as hot.  But it's not as ideal as when its blue and sunny," he said.

Of course there were a few hardcore families who were determined to secure the perfect spot several hours before the fireworks even started.

"It makes it a family tradition.  We come here every 4th.  We may do other stuff during the day but every fourth we're always here," said Anna Irwin of Dayton.

"Hopefully there's a lot more people coming, they're just coming a littler later," said Debbie Henderson of Dayton.

Well, she was right!  Hundreds of people flooded Delco Park about an hour before the big event, helping vendors salvage a little profit.

Earlier coverage:

KETTERING -- The show must go on!  That's the message from organizers at the "Go 4th" event at Delco Park in Kettering.

Families started arriving around 6pm with umbrellas and ponchos in hand. There were plenty of food and information booths set up.  Chefs were prepping their grills all afternoon, hoping families decide to brave the rain.  Last year at this time, it was about 100 degrees and humid, so the rain is definitely a 180.  Not good news for most of the vendors here.  They expect profits to be down by about 50 percent this year because of the rain.

"This is an event when people bring blankets and sit on the grass.  But it's muddy out there so unless you have a lawn chair you're out of luck.  If it stays like this it may not be too bad.  But when it rains it does affect business quite a bit," said Chef Rick Schaeffer with Brock Masterson's Catering and Events.

Fireworks at Delco Park start at 9:45pm.  Organizers say they won't cancel.
