Is Our Government Too Big?
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Is our government too big and powerful? That seemed to be a central theme of the 2012 election and a central message of Tea Party groups around the country for years.
Now, the Obama Administration seems to agree.
The President's advisors blame the size of the government on them being late to the game finding out about the IRS targeting incident. But, shrinking the size of the government has been issue #1 for some lawmakers for years.
The IRS targeting scandal brought about many questions about why the President didn't act sooner in dealing with the tax agency. David Axelrod, a former advisor for Obama, answers, "part of being President is that there's so much that you can't know because the government is so vast."
After all, there are 456 federal agencies and hundreds of sub-agencies within those.
Senior Legal Fellow of The Heritage Foundation, Hans Von Spakovsky, believes that's what the Executive Office is for. "The whole point of that staff is to keep track of what is going on in the rest of the government and what's going on in the country and to keep the President briefed on the issues he needs to know about."
As it turns out, the President has been finding out about not just the IRS incident but man others as well, from the media.
When the press knows what's happening before those supposed to be in charge of what's happening, Von Spakovsky says it's worrisome, but hopes it may be an impetus for change.
