New Student Loan Rates Set to Increase Without Congress Acting
DAYTON -- College is a huge investment, and for those who need help paying for it, there's some bad news come Monday. Some of the federal student loan rates are doubling, which means you'll be dishing out more when it's time to pay up.
The University of Dayton is one of a few colleges Elizabeth Thomas is touring. She plans to study speech pathology.
"Everyone's going on college visits and asking, "Have you been here yet? It's kind of exciting," said Thomas, who will be Debbie Thomas' second child in college.
Nowadays, it's an outrageous investment so you want to make sure you're in the right spot," she said.
To help pay for it, some students take out subsidized loans. That means the government pays the interest while you're in school. If Congress does not act by Monday July 1, new loan rates are doubling from 3.4 to 6.8 percent. In repayment, that is an additional $38 each month, or more than $450 per year.
"This investment that we're all making. I'm very concerned about student loan debt burden," said Kathy McEuen Harmon, UD's Dean of Admission and Financial Aid.
She urges people to borrow only what they need and expects the rates will go up, but there is some good news.
"There are income-based repayment plans for student lending, there are income contingent plans so those can actually override the increase in rates," said McEuen Harmon.
That is something the Thomas' will be happy to hear.
"Education is terribly important if as a nation we're going to compete, so we need kids who are going to be able to afford to go to the next level," said Debbie Thomas.
