Miami Twp Police Chief to Retire, Board Approves
MIAMI TWP. -- The Miami Township Board of Trustees officially accepted Friday morning the retirement of Police Chief John Krug.
Krug sent a letter on May 30 announcing that he will be officially retiring. His last day will be June 28.
"After much deliberation and consultation, I have decided it is now time for me to turn over leadership of the Miami Township Police Department to someone else so that the department may continue to prosper and move toward an accredited status," Krug said in his letter of resignation.
Krug has been with the police department since 1996. The news comes as residents of Miami Township approved a police levy that saved many of the department's jobs.
Reporter Annette Peagler reached out to Chief Krug for a comment, but has not yet been successful.
His retirement announcement comes weeks after he sent a letter to the Board of Trustees stating he planned to retire July 31, but asked to be re-hired so that his pension benefits would not be affected. ABC 22 News obtained a copy of that letter.
Emails followed to members of the police department stating if he wasn't re-hired that he would consider running for township trustee this fall.
"I actually perceived it as blackmail. The email basically stated that if he didn't get his way that he was going to run for office against one particular trustee and I'm assuming that's me," said Miami Township Board of Trustees President Mike
Noland said the board has denied that request and is proceeding forward in the process to choose a new police chief.
"I know it's a financial consideration he wanted us to make for him but I just don't believe in triple dipping. I don't think it's an effective cost way of managing and I believe there's times you just need to move on. I thought it was inappropriate for the chief to put an email out to his people, which undermines the decisions of the board," Noland said.
Annette Peagler was the only member of the media at the Trustee meeting Friday morning. She will have reaction from the board and community reaction on ABC 22 at 6 and FOX 45 at 6:30. Follow her on Twitter by clicking here.
