Neighbors Speak Out About Suspected Burglar; Shot and Killed
UPDATE -- Sheriff's deputies say Mark Owen was drunk and being driven home from a party when he jumped out of a moving vehicle and began running toward a woman's home on Blee Road.
Owen began taking his clothes off while trying to break into the home, deputies said.
The neighbor then opened fire, killing the man.
It is unknown if the neighbor will be facing any charges.
CLARK COUNTY -- As of Saturday night, no charges have been filed against the man who reportedly shot and killed an attempted intruder of his neighbor's house in Green Township.
It happened at 877 Blee Road.
The woman inside that home called 911 and then her neighbor for help after she said she noticed a man, partially clothed, trying to get into her back door.
She was home alone with two young children. Her neighbor came over armed with a gun.
"There was a confrontation. The suspect came at the neighbor, the neighbor had armed himself with a shotgun and during that confrontation, one round was fired at the suspect," Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly said.
The suspected burglar has been identified as Mark Owen of South Vienna.
"We believe that he was under the influence of some type of drugs, alcohol or a combination and that he had been partying all night with friends and at some point he had become uncontrollable, agitated and had gotten out of a vehicle," Kelly said.
CareFlight transported Owen to Miami Valley Hospital, where he later died.
A neighbor witnessed the aftermath when the incident happened just before 7 a.m. Saturday. He says something like this is very unusual in this neighborhood.
"Well I'm worried most about the people that were involved but I've been told that our neighbors are all OK," said Chuck Winkleman.
"This is very unlikely, this is a quiet neighborhood."
However, people who live on Blee were not surprised that a neighbor came to the woman's rescue. Neighbors say 95 percent of the homeowners on this street are armed.
"I mean we watch out for each other, pretty much that's the way it is in Ohio. We take care of each other and hope for the best," said Ron Rodriguez, a neighbor.
Police have questioned the neighbor who allegedly shot and killed that suspect. So far no charges have been filed. The case will be handed to a Clark County prosecutor.
