UPDATE: Zimmerman Trial Underway

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) -- The murder trial of George Zimmerman is now underway.

Jaws dropped in the jury box when prosecutor John Guy electrified the courtroom with a short, profanity-laced, impassioned opening argument that sought to paint the defendant as an angry, out of control vigilante who was stalking 17-year-old Trayvon Martin when he shot the teen in the gated community in Sanford, Florida.

The all-female jury also heard an unconventional knock knock joke from the defense attorney.

Martin's mother was present in court, and says she wants justice for her son.  "I ask that you pray for me and my family, because I don't want any other mother to have to experience what I'm going through now.  Thank you."

If Zimmerman is found guilty, he faces a possible sentences of life in prison.

The trial is expected to last around two to four weeks.

He claims he did it in self-defense.

UPDATE: Zimmerman Trial: Jury Selection in Progress

SANFORD, Fla. -- Today marks the second day of jury selection in the George Zimmerman trial.

Lawyers and prosecutors in Seminole County, Fla., are questioning about a hundred potential members of that panel.

The first day of jury selection ended without a single juror picked.

At least 10 people are needed: six jurors and four alternatives.

Zimmerman is charged with the second-degree murder of Trayvon Martin.

The volunteer neighborhood watchman claims self-defense, although prosecutors say Zimmerman racially profiled the teen.

Earlier coverage:

SANFORD, Fla. -- Was it self-defense or murder?  That's the question at the heart of the George Zimmerman trial, which began today with jury selection.

Zimmerman has been accused of shooting and killing 17-year-old Trayvon martin in Seminole County, Florida in February of last year.

This trial is anticipated to be one of the most followed cases of the year.

The shooting has sparked numerous debates about race relations and gun laws in America.  Zimmerman is Hispanic, Martin was African-American.

Zimmerman has plead not guilty.

Earlier coverage:

Financial Support for Neighborhood Watch Volunteer Accused of Murder

MIRAMAR, Fla. -- Financial support is pouring in for the neighborhood watch volunteer accused of murdering a Florida teen.

George Zimmerman's attorneys announced his legal fund was getting low.  Within 2 days of the announcement, $32,000 had been donated.

Some donors said they're not sure if Zimmerman murdered Trayvon Martin or if it really was self-defense, but they want him to have a fair trial.

The trial is set to begin next month.
