Wright State women face Green Bay with chance to clinch title

The first-place Wright State women’s basketball team will host second-place Green Bay Friday at 5 pm and Milwaukee Sunday at 5 pm.

Wright State: The Raiders, now 22-6 and 14-2, broke a 13-game winning streak as they fell at Detroit Mercy Monday night 85-80. The 85 points is the most allowed by WSU this season.

It is the fourth straight year that the Raiders have won at least 20 games. 14 league wins sets a new record for most wins by WSU women’s basketball. The previous record was 12.

The only other league loss was at Green Bay on December 31 62-41. Chelsea Welch scored 25 points for the Raiders in that game. Wright State opened the league schedule at Milwaukee on December 29 with a 69-51 win.

Three Raiders average in double figures: Welch (19.0), Lexi Smith (12.9), Emily Vogelpohl (11.1). Symone Simmons (9.2) and Smith (9.1) lead the Raiders in rebounding. Simmons is at 9.8 points per game while Mackenzie Taylor Mackenzie sits at 9.8.

Last Time Out: The Raiders lost at Detroit 85-80 as Welch had 29 points with six assists and Lexi Smith added 16 points and 11 rebounds. Mackenzie Taylor finished with 17 points. The teams were tied at 39 each at half.

Series: Green Bay, regular-season champions for 18 straight years, leads the series 58-4. Milwaukee and Wright State has split the 54 meetings exactly in half.

Green Bay: The Phoenix, 22-5 and 13-3, are coming off a 65-31 win over UIC Monday night. Green Bay has gone 3-3 over the last six games. Three GB players scored in double figures against UIC, led by Jessica Lindstrom with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Mehryn Kraker leads the team at 18.3 points per game.

Milwaukee: The Panthers, 19-8 and 11-5, have won four straight. UWM beat Valparaiso 80-64 at home Monday night, led by Jenny Lindner with 23 points. Stephanie Kostowicz leads the Panthers at 15.4 points per game while Lindner averages 15.3.
