UD Flyers adjusting to new coach as they prepare to return to the court
DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT) - We are only 44 days out and counting from the return of Flyers basketball.
The team will open the season taking on Ohio Dominican, but the team isn't quite ready to take off the warm-up gear.
New Head Coach Anthony Grant said he's spending the time getting to know his team, and that there aren't any expectations or limitations as the team moves on from Archie Miller into the Grant regime.
UD guard Darrell Davis said the biggest challenge will come on defense for the team, as Grant pushes for a full court man-to-man system, hoping it will produce more turnovers.
Another change for the team will come in leadership, as they'll hit the court with Josh Cunningham as the only captain.
Grant told FOX 45 he's still working with his coaching staff to adjust to the new surroundings.
"I'm still learning our team," he said. "You know, hopefully, our identity will be established in terms of the way we play offensively and defensively."
"I feel like everybody's gotten better, over the time, over the summer," forward Josh Cunningham said. "We've been putting in countless hours, so we just have to continue to do that."
"New coach, same program," Davis said. "I think Coach Grant knows what we want, and what he wants, and that's to win games and play hard, and try to advance in the tournament."
