UD Announces 2017-18 MBB Non-Conference Schedule
DAYTON (UD Athletics) - The University of Dayton men's basketball program's first season under the direction of Anthony Grant will feature a home game against Auburn, a trip to the Gildan Charleston Classic and road games at Mississippi State and Saint Mary's.
"I am excited about the schedule," Grant said. "I think it is a schedule that will challenge us. You have a variety of styles of play and competitive teams that will be a measuring stick in terms of where we are as a team and where we need to get to."
The Flyers' non-conference slate will include seven home games, two on the road and three neutral site games at the Gildan Charleston Classic exempt tournament Nov. 16-19.
A highlight of the Dayton schedule is the addition of new home-and-home series with Auburn and Mississippi State.
The home game with Auburn features a team that returns all five starters (with four of them being the team's top four scorers as freshmen last year). Coach Bruce Pearl's team was 18-14 in 2016-17. Mississippi State was 16-16 last year in its second season under former Pitt and UCLA coach Ben Howland. The Bulldogs return three starters this season, and will return the game in Dayton in 2018-19.
Dayton's third series game is when the Flyers travel to California to visit the Saint Mary's Gaels. Saint Mary's was 29-5 in 2016-17 and returns four starters from that club that advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament. The Gaels are projected to be a top 25 team in 2017-18.
Not counting the teams in the Charleston Classic, UD's nine non-conference opponents include:
• Eight who return three or more starters (one with five, two with four)
• Six with .500 or better records
• Four with 20 or more wins
• Both Mid-American Conference divisional champions from 2017
Dayton opens the regular season at home against Ball State on Friday, Nov. 10. The following weekend, UD will travel to play in the Gildan Charleston Classic Nov. 16-19. The tournament field in Charleston includes Auburn, Clemson, Dayton, Hofstra, Indiana State, Old Dominion, Ohio and Temple. Pairings will be announced later this summer.
The Flyers return home to play two games – Akron (Saturday, Nov. 25) and Auburn (Wednesday, Nov. 29) – before going on the road at Mississippi State (Sunday, Dec. 3).
UD then has three more home games wrapped around the end of the semester – Tennessee Tech (Wednesday, Dec. 6), Penn (Saturday, Dec. 9) and Georgia State (Saturday, Dec. 16).
Following a cross-country trip to square off against Saint Mary's on Tuesday, Dec. 19, Dayton will close out the non-conference schedule at home on Saturday, Dec. 23 against Wagner.
Game times will be announced at a later date, as will the complete Atlantic 10 schedule.
Dayton was 24-8 overall, and Atlantic 10 Conference regular season champions with a 15-3 league record last season. The Flyers reached the NCAA tournament for the fourth consecutive year and set a UD Arena attendance record, averaging 13,108 fans per game.
