Josh Cunningham named A-10 Co-Player Of The Week
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (UD Athletics) – University of Dayton forward Josh Cunningham has been named Atlantic 10 Co-Player of the Week after lifting UD to a 78-77 season-opening win over Ball State Friday, Nov. 10.
Cunningham took an out-of-bounds feed in the paint from Xeyrius Williams and dropped in a basket with 0.1 seconds left for the game winner. He also intercepted the desperation downcourt heave for the steal that ended the game.
The Flyer captain scored a college career-high 22 points (8-11 FG, 6-8 FT) with a team-high seven rebounds (tied with Trey Landers). Cunningham scored 10 of Dayton’s final 17 points in the game, beginning with a dunk with 6:17 left in the game that gave Dayton the lead (63-62) that it would not relinquish.
The product of Chicago’s Morgan Park High School had previous career highs of 13 points for the Flyers in last year’s season opener, and 17 points while playing for Bradley in 2014-15.
Cunningham shared this week’s A-10 honor with Davidson’s Jon Axel Gudmundsson.
Dayton’s next action will be Thursday in Charleston, S.C. at the Gildan Charleston Classic. UD will play Hofstra in the first round. The game tips at 7:30 p.m. ET and will be televised on ESPNU.
