Vote 2012: One on One with Mitt Romney in Mansfield

MANSFIELD -- Republican candidate Mitt Romney has returned to the presidential battleground of Ohio, looking to take advantage of President Barack Obama's absence.

Romney visited Mansfield in northern Ohio on Monday and criticized the president over deep defense cuts scheduled as part of a deficit-reduction proposal. Those possible cuts mean the city would lose its 179th Air National Guard unit, which would cost hundreds of jobs.

Romney said the proposal would be bad for employment and national security, and he vowed to not only block such cuts if he's elected, but also increase defense spending by more than one trillion dollars.

"The first responsibility of the President is to protect the nation to secure the safety of the people and that means a military that's up to the task," Romney told a reporter from our sister station in Columbus on Monday.

He also touched on health care reform.  The former Massachusetts governor was cited over the weekend as saying he liked some of the features of the new health care law.  But, he remained unclear what if any parts of the current law would stay around if he is elected.

"In fact, the number one priority for me is helping reduce the costs," Romney said. "In fact, health care costs just keep exploding like crazy, people can't afford insurance.  You're seeing small employers cut people from coverage."

Romney's campaign has running mate Paul Ryan scheduled back in southern Ohio on Wednesday evening, at the Clermont County fairgrounds.

Obama's campaign says Democratic Vice President Biden will visit Wright State University in Dayton on Wednesday.Vote 2012: One on One with Mitt Romney in Mansfield
