Dash Cam Video Released of Officer Involved Shooting

DAYTON- The 17-year-old, who was shot by a Dayton Police Officer on Thursday,  was released from Miami Valley Hospital.
The teen  is now in the Montgomery  County Juvenile Justice Center.

Police Chief Richard Biehl said the 17-year-old suspect was shot out of self-defense after he got out of a stolen car and pointed a gun at an officer.

Dash cam video, released by Dayton Police,  shows police in hot pursuit of a stolen car.

The driver of the stolen  Monte Carlo,  refused to pull over for police.
In the video, the driver raced  through stop signs in residential neighborhoods and ran red lights.

At one point, they narrowly missed hitting a semi at an intersection.

The pursuit came to  a stop on  Stolz Avenue when they crashed into a fence.

Police said  the 17 -year-old passenger got out of the car with a gun and pointed  the gun at an officer.

Chief Biehl said Officer Jon Sopczak  shot  the teen one time,  in self defense.

"The suspect  chose to get out of the car , with the  gun in hand.  I believe that shows malintent." He said.

"We have a right and a duty to protect ourselves and other innocent parties from that threat." Chief added.

The 17 year old's name is not being released, because he is a juvenile. He has  injuries to his hand and leg--
from the gunshot wound and an attack of  a K 9.

The driver of the stolen car, Askiya Robinson, 21,  was arrested  down the street from the shooting scene.

Police said Robinson and the  teen, who are cousins, are believed to have stolen  the car on Wednesday on Palmerston Avenue .

Police said  the car jacking victim  was beaten in the face and body with a gun.

Both Robinson and the teen are facing numerous charges.

"I think this situation is egregious and I think the juvenile should be tried as an adult." Chief Biehl said.  Dash Cam Video Released of Officer Involved Shooting
