Obama Would Pay for Jobs Plan With Cuts, Tax Hikes; Local Republican Lawmakers React

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama wants to pay for his new $450 billion jobs plan with a mixture of tax increases,
spending cuts and trims to Medicare and Medicaid. He says he'll release specifics a week from Monday along with a proposal to
stabilize the country's long-term debt.

The President told Congress Thursday night that he will ask a congressional supercommittee that's already charged with cutting $1.5 trillion from the deficit to find additional savings to pay for his new plan.

At the same time, he says he'll target Medicare and Medicaid -- even though Democrats oppose such cuts -- and attempt to make the wealthy pay more in taxes -- something the GOP has blocked in the past.

After Mr. Obama's address of the joint session of Congress, two local Republican lawmakers, including Speaker of the House John Boehner released these statements.

Here is part of Speaker Boehner's statement:
''The proposals the President outlined tonight merit consideration. We hope he gives serious consideration to our ideas as well. It's my hope that we can work together to end the uncertainty facing families and small businesses, and create a better environment for long-term economic growth and private-sector job creation.''

Congressman Mike Turner also voiced his opinion saying in part:
''In a time when we should be focusing on reducing our deficit and creating incentives for long term job creation, the President put forward a plan that is more of the same failed spending proposals that put us in financial crisis we currently face today.''
