Making The Grade: Teacher Advice For a Successful School Year

Tips for Parents for Back to School

1. Do a Transportation Practice Run
Make sure your walker or bus rider knows the route to and from school. Take the time to walk the route with them before school resumes, ensuring to point out safe ways to cross streets, safe places they can run to in the event of an emergency, the correct bus stop, and the route to get home from the bus stop. This is especially important for elementary school students and those students who may have had their method of transportation changed since last school year. Be sure to talk about "stranger danger" and walking safety.

2. Develop Healthy Habits
Before school resumes, help your child get back on healthy sleep routine. It is essential for students to have appropriate amounts of sleep each night to be focused and ready for school each day. Consider making bedtimes a little earlier 1-2 weeks before school resumes to get kids ready to wake for school each day. Remind students of healthy hygiene habits like washing hands, sneezing and coughing into the arm, and not sharing food and drinks with other students. It important that kids know how to protect themselves, and others, from germs that can make them sick. Breakfast is a must every morning! You can prepare grab and go meals the night before or have cereal bars and fruit ready. Just make sure they start the day with a complete meal!

3. Send Kids Back PREPARED
It is true that if we fail to prepare, we are prepared to fail. Make sure that your child has the appropriate supplies to be successful in school. Check your child's school for the school supply lists and make sure they have everything on it. In addition, some other items may be helpful like extra pencils, flash drive, highlighters, and extra filler paper. Have extra supplies on hand so that your child has all the supplies on hand for homework and study time at home!

4. Set Goals and Expectations
As a family, sit down and talk about what the individual goals are for each child. Record them and post them! Talk about how you as a parent will help your child reach their goals. Don't set goals like, "straight A's," or "do good in math." Make them specific, measurable, attainable, and individualized. Some examples might be, "I will spend 60 minutes on homework each night and read 30 minutes 4 times a week," or "I will commit 1 hour of my time to my child's school each week during the school year."  It's important to you make these goals together and check your progress on a regular basis!

5. Find Ways to Get Involved
Contact your child's school or school district to find out the process to become a volunteer, member of a PTO, Education Council, etc. You MUST be a partner in your child's education. If you don't know what to do or to do it, just ask! For instance, in Dayton Public Schools, we have the Dayton Education Council at the district level and volunteer opportunities in every school. We want to see more parents involved. The best offense for your child's education is to "walk the walk." Studies show that students who have active and involved parents, do far better in school than those whose parents are not actively involved in their education. Can't volunteer? You can be involved by reading at home, checking homework, emailing teachers, providing proper supplies, and being a great supporter!
