WKEF-TV ABC 22 News :: News - Good Morning - Alexis Gets Ticket to Hollywood!

Alexis Gets Ticket to Hollywood!

"Last night Centerville native Alexis Gomez got the chance of a lifetime to sing in front of the judges on American Idol.
She's here with us this morning to tell us what happened and what she felt like during that entire process.
Good morning.
Good morning and thanks for having me back.
Oh my goodness we are so excited for you.
So take us to that moment when you walk through the doors and you see the Idol celebrity judges in front of you.
That was so nerve wracking. Already you're so nervous, but then to walk in and be in front of people that famous and established, especially music that I look up to, that made it so much more nervous.
And how did you calm your nerves and sing?
So when I was inside that little box, I was literally just praying 'Dear God please help me calm down and control my breath.'
That's literally exactly what I was doing.
And were you thrown by anything they said to you?
Well, Keith Urban wasn't the most supportive, but I hope I'll win you over. He wasn't thinking that it wasn't my time. So he told me 'no'. But the other two saw something in me.
And why do you think he said no?
Umm, you know I think that he's really close to a lot of the country singers especially the girls that I look up to in country music.
So I think obviously that you're going to compare me to them, and by no means do I think I'm as good as those people but hopefully one day I will be.
I think he's just a little closer to my genre, so he can't be a little harder on me but that's okay.
And what else did they say to you that leaves a lasting impression on you?
Harry Connick he told me 'Hey, you're going to be compared to Carrie Underwood.' And she is the best of the best especially coming from Idol with that power voice and her amazing raw talent.
And he said nobody can be better than Carrie Underwood, you need to bring something new, something fresh that America wants to see in order to get past these next couple of rounds.
So that's what I'm going to take that advice and go home and work on that.
And how did you pick the song that you decided to sing?
So that was a hard thing too, I was going through, there's so many songs that I love. You get a shortened time and I can only play guitar with it or sing it acapella. So I just picked like five songs and sat my family and friends down and said I'm going through all of these. We voted on it and picked "Little White Church" by Little Big Town.
Awesome. And when you really get that ticket, what happens next in your mind and how do you prepare for that next round when you're in Hollywood? What are you doing now?
Right, so, when you get that ticket, I forget everything, you're so exicted and you can't believe that's happening.
But you're right, man, as soon as you get back to reality, you really have to buckle down.
Because like the judges said, man, there's so much competition and I heard some of the people singing and they're so good.
So going into Hollywood week, I'm going to have to go home and perfect and give exactly what they were looking for.
All the advice they gave me, come back, bring that power, bring that energy, that performance side of it too.
Man, work my butt off so I can make it through Hollywood.
And you know everyone in the Miami Valley is going to be cheering you on. Good luck!
The idol auditions continue tonight at 8 right here on Fox 45.
And of course we'll be cheering on Alexis as she starts her journey.
