PAY IT FORWARD: Each month we highlight one person or organization that is giving back to the Miami Valley.

Today, in partnership with Elk and Elk , Natalie Lizarraga takes a look at a very special program making a difference in the lives of young readers.

Ali Martin started a non-profit in Troy called Reading For Change. The program is designed as an after-school activity and a place where kids can go and learn to love reading.

“The teachers are so slammed right now just with everything they are doing and I thought how could I give them more aid and how could I help them, and how could I give them a safe place to stay after school. And then Reading For Change was born,” Martin said.

The free program runs only with the help of current and former teachers who serve as reading tutors.

Miss Sandy and Miss Debbie both have been teachers for 30 and 35 years, and now they spend all their time here, just goes to show you how dedicated they are and how passionate they are about bettering kids in our community.

Ali Martin is using Reading For Change to Pay It Forward one word and one smile at a time.

“My favorite part is standing at the door and seeing their smiles as they enter the building, that’s my favorite part and giving them a big hug. And then seeing them off with the same big smiles on their face, going home, that’s my favorite part,” Martin said.
