Keeping Families Safe: New study shows Americans are consuming more alcohol (WKEF/WRGT)

Americans are drinking a lot more these days, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Researchers tracked drinking patterns among 40,000 people during 2002 and 2003 and then again in 2013 and 2014.

They found during that time, alcohol use disorders rose by nearly 50 percent.

Researchers estimate 30 million people in the U.S. struggle with an alcohol use disorder, which is one out of every eight Americans, and the group with the greatest increase is senior citizens.

Over the study period, there was a 106 percent increase in alcohol use disorders in those 65 and older. Crisis Care Dr. Luis Tellez asid there are three main reasons: “There’s economic stressors, isolation, and depression.”

Alcohol is linked to the reward mechanism in the brain and its tied to the opioid receptor.

An alcohol use disorder is defined as a situation where drinking interferes with home, family or job responsibilities.
