Community plans prayer vigil for children allegedly shot by their mother

Community plans prayer vigil for children allegedly shot by their mother (WKEF/WRGT)

TROTWOOD, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT) – The community has plans to come together to show their support for two young shooting victims just a few days after it happened.

Police said the children’s mother, Claudena Helton, shot her 6-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter in the head in their home May 18. Her 11-year-old daughter was also home at the time, but was unharmed.

Kaden and Kamora were continuing to fight for their lives as the community prepares to pray for them, and Pastor Norman Scearce said it seemed right to have the vigil at his church.

Two Helton’s children do go to school in Trotwood, and Scearce said his congregation at Gateway Cathedral Church of God was impacted by the shooting and wanted to offer some sense of solace.

He felt prayer was all they had to offer.

Scearce also said the service wasn’t just for the kids, but for their mom. Police said she appeared to have mental health issues before the shooting.

“We want to make sure that the community understands that we are here,” he said, “and that we are willing to offer our prayers and support in times of trouble.”

If you would like to join the prayer service, it will be at 1 p.m. at Gateway Cathedral Church of God in Trotwood.
