16-year-old texts 911 in Miami County to get the help she needed
MIAMI COUNTY, Ohio (WKEF/WRGT) – Quick thinking by a 16-year-old in Miami County allowed crews get out to her and give her the help she needed Saturday.
She had been inside a car with 20-year-old Matthew Weigel and told dispatchers that he was driving to the Dayton area to buy heroin, and she was concerned about both of their safety.
Weigel had reportedly been making comments that he would run from police and crash the car if necessary, according to the director of the Miami County communications center Jeff Busch.
She was able to text with dispatch for about 30 minutes until they were able to set up crews to stop the car.
“I thought it was the ideal use of text-to-911 for the young lady’s safety,” Busch said, “and it was the kind of result we certainly hoped for.”
Texting 911 works in Miami, Clark and parts of Montgomery County, but Bush said if you can, call. It makes it easier and faster for dispatchers to be able to get you the help you need.
Weigel is currently back behind bars on a probation violation.
